  16. on charges of extorting bribes; in Los Angeles. A federal grand
  17. jury alleged that as mayor of Compton, a struggling Southern
  18. California city, Tucker took $30,000 and sought $250,000 more
  19. from a company hoping to build a waste-run power plant. Tucker,
  20. who earlier accused the government of waging a campaign against
  21. black legislators, denied the charges "unequivocally."
